This museum, whose scientific director is Jean-Louis Heim, professor at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, is divided into nine different areas, all of which examine the Neanderthal period. The highlight of the museum in the centre of the main room is the reconstruction of a pit containing a replica of the skeleton of Neanderthal man, as found in 1908 by Jean Bouyssonie. Family workshops (fire, painting, spear-throwing) on Thursdays and Friday mornings in July-August. Open 2 April to 4 November, daily except Thursday, 2.30-6pm; July-August, daily, 10am-noon and 2.30-6pm. Open all year for groups by prior arrangement. Duration: 40min. Entrance fee.
